After the first Declarations of Independence in 1810, former viceroyalties and colonies declared themselves as sovereign states. However, the construction of national identities has to be considered an indefinite process that still lingers on nowadays. These newly formed Latin American states often tended to gear to European examples while at the same time, their idea of national identity focused on reintroducing their indigenous heritage, deriving from the ‘old’ cultures of America. The present publication offers a widely spread spectrum on various topics about the importance of the arts in nation building.

Nach den ersten Unabhängigkeitserklärungen im Jahr 1810 erklärten sich die vormaligen Vizekönigreiche und Kolonien zu souveränen Staaten. Dessen ungeachtet muss die Konstruktion von nationalen Identitäten als ein zeitlich unbegrenzter Prozess betrachtet werden, der auch heutzutage noch nicht abgeschlossen ist. Diese neu gegründeten lateinamerikanischen Staaten neigten häufig dazu, europäischen Vorbildern nachzueifern, während sich gleichzeitig ihre Vorstellung von nationaler Identität darauf konzentrierte, sich auf ihre indigenen Wurzeln, die der “alten” Kulturen Amerikas, zurückzubesinnen. Diese Publikation bietet ein breitgefächertes Spektrum unterschiedlicher Themen im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung der Kunst für die Entstehung einer nationalen Identität.

Después de las primeras declaraciones de independencia en 1810, los antiguos virreinatos y colonias se declararon estados soberanos. Sin embargo, hay que considerar la construcción de identidades nacionales como un proceso indefinido que todavía continúa hasta hoy. Estos estados latinoamericanos recientemente formados tendían a emular a los europeos, mientras que su concepto de identidad nacional se concentraba en volver a sus raíces indígenas, a las culturas prehispánicas de América. La presente publicación ofrece un gran abanico de variados temas relacionados con el papel de las artes en la construcción de la nación.

Henrik Karge and Bruno Klein are both Professors of Art History at the Technische Universität Dresden. They are members of the Carl Justi Association, and Karge is a longstanding member of its presidential staff. His main fields of research are the history of art in Spain and Latin America (especially Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Spain) and the art and art historiography of the 19th century in Germany. Klein’s own research mainly includes studies on medieval art in Europe. During 2015/16 he is Richard Krautheimer Fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome. Both scholars held lectures and courses at universities in Latin America, Karge in Bogotá and Medellín, Klein in São Paulo.
